Powerline Accessories

Electrical power connectors are in use in all EHV substations as connections between busbars and equipments.

Power connectors are tailor made for specific application. Some typical applications:-

  • Tee Connectors
  • Parallel Groove Clamps
  • Bus-Supports
  • Reducer Clamps
  • Bus Couplers
  • Rigid Type and expansion type connectors for busbars and equipments.
  • Pad Type and stud type connectors for equipment connections.
  • Space Clamps for bundle conductor configurations.

DESIGN CRITERIA

(a) Reliability :

Power connectors are designed to provide trouble free service under normal and abnormal load and weather conditions.

(b) Electrical Efficiency :

The design provides for :

1. The joint to run cooler than the associate busbar under normal and fault conditions; and

2. Visual corona and RIV under dry and wet conditions to be within the prescribed limits.

(c) Mechanical Strength :

Connectors are designed to be mechanically strong to withstand load imposed during installation, normal service and fault conditions.

(d) Corrosion Resistance :

For application, in areas close to chemical industries and seashores, connectors are designed to be corrosion resistant.

CORONA & RIV CONTROLLED CONNECTORS FOR EHV APPLICATIONS

For 220KV and 400KV systems, self-shielded corona-free connectors are designed so that under fair weather operating conditions, the voltage gradient at the connector surface will be at a level that will not cause corona and resultant radio interference (RIV).Under dry & wet conditions, to keep the gradient below the critical level the following aspects are considered in our design:

  • Generous radii are provided on all outside surfaces to keep the voltage stresses to a minimum.
  • Bolts in the connector body are suitably recessed or shrouded.
  • Casting designed with large surface area to reduce voltage stress.
